The 2019 awards season has sadly come to an end and what better way is there to end the season than with the 91st annual Academy Awards? I am here to predict what and who will win, could win, and most importantly, deservesto win in some of the biggest Oscar categories of the evening. This has been one of the most unpredictable awards seasons yet with so many fantastic films of 2018 to be counted for. Tune in this Sunday, February 24th, to see who will take home the gold. Oh yeah, and a hostess Oscars at that. This shall be interesting...

“Best Picture”
Both the hardest category to predict and perhaps the most important one of the evening, “Best Picture” could truly go to any film, but here’s what I’m thinking…

The nominees are:
“A Star is Born”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “BlacKkKlansman”, “Green Book”, “The Favourite”, “Roma”, “Vice”, and “Black Panther”. 


What will win (but shouldn't win): “Roma” 
What could win: “Green Book” 
What could also win: "Black Panther" or "BlacKkKlansman"
What deserves to win: “Green Book” 
Bonus- Snubbed of a nomination: “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Not a chance: "A Star Is Born" and "Vice"

“Best Film Actress”

The nominees are: Lady Gaga “A Star is Born”, Glenn Close “The Wife”, Yalitza Aparico “Roma”, Melissa McCarthy “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, and Olivia Coleman “The Favourite”. 


Who will win: Glenn Close 
Who could win: Lady Gaga
 Who deserves to win: Olivia Coleman

“Best Film Actor”

The nominees are: Rami Malek “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Bradley Cooper “A Star is Born”, Christian Bale “Vice”, Willem Dafoe “At Eternity’s Gate”, and Viggo Mortensen “Green Book”. 



Who will win: Rami Malek 
Who could win: Christian Bale 
Who deserves to win: Rami Malek! (Seriously, if he doesn't win I'm quitting my job as a film critic!)
 Bonus- Snubbed of a nomination: John David Washington for “BlacKkKlansman”

“Best Film Supporting Actress”


The nominees are: Regina King “If Beale Street Could Talk”, Amy Adams “Vice”, Rachel Weisz “The Favourite”, Marina de Tavira “Roma”, and Emma Stone “The Favourite”.

 Who will win: Regina King 
Who could win: Amy Adams 
Who deserves to win:Regina King

“Best Film Supporting Actor” 

The nominees are: Mahershala Ali “Green Book”, Sam Elliot “A Star is Born”, Adam Driver “BlacKkKlansman”, Sam Rockwell “Vice”, and Richard E. Grant “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”


Who will win: Mahershala Ali 
Who could win: Richard E. Grant 
Who deserves to win: Mahershala Ali. 
Bonus- Snubbed of a nomination (as well as the biggest snub of the season): Timothèe Chalamet for “Beautiful Boy”. I mean, seriously?!


 “Best Film Director”

The nominees are: Alfonso Cuaron “Roma”, Spike Lee “BlacKkKlansman”, Pawel Pawlikowski “Cold War”, Yorgos Lanthimos “The Favourite” and Adam McKay “Vice”. 



Who will win: Alfonso Cuaron 
Who could win: Spike Lee 
Who deserves to win: Spike Lee

“Best Adapted Screenplay”

The nominees are: "BlacKkKlansman”, “If Beale Street Could Talk”, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, “Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “A Star Is Born”. 



What will win: “BlacKkKlansman” 
What could win: “If Beale Street Could Talk” 
What deserves to win: “BlacKkKlansman” (Honestly, either of these could win and I would be very pleased by whichever one takes it home!)

“Best Original Screenplay”

The nominees are: “The Favourite”, “Green Book”, “Roma”, “Vice”, and “First Reformed”.


What will win: “The Favourite”
 What could win: “Roma”
What deserves to win: “Green Book” 
Bonus-Snubbed of a nomination:“Eighth Grade”

“Best Animated Feature”

The nominees are: “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse”, “Incredibles 2”, “Ralph Breaks the Internet”, “Mirai”, and “Isle of Dogs”. 

What will win:“Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse”
 What could win:“Incredibles 2” 
What deserves to win:“Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse”

“Best Foreign Language Film”

The nominees are: “Roma”, “Never Look Away”, “Shoplifters”, “Cold War”, and “Capernaum”. 


What will win: “Roma” 
What could win:“Cold War” 
What deserves to win:“Roma”

“Best Score”

The nominees are: “Mary Poppins Returns”, “BlacKkKlansman”, “Black Panther”, “Isle of Dogs”, and “If Beale Street Could Talk”. 



What will win: “If Beale Street Could Talk” 
What could win: “Black Panther” 
What deserves to win: “If Beale Street Could Talk”

“Best Original Song”

The nominees are: “Shallow” from “A Star is Born”, “I’ll Fight” from “RBG”, “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns”, “All the Stars” from “Black Panther”, and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from “Ballad of Buster Scruggs”. 


What will win: “Shallow” 
What could win: “All the Stars” 
What deserves to win: “All the Stars”.

"I, Tonya" (2017) Film Review

  “I, Tonya” gives audiences a different look into what really happened on that rink in 1994. Directed By: Craig Gilespie Rated: R Runtime: 2:01 Review By: Livi Edmonson Dazzling audiences with its tough love humor and retro spunk, “I, Tonya” is a biopic that stars Margot Robbie as the extremely gifted figure skater, Tonya Harding. At the age of “a soft four”, Tonya’s abusive and controlling mother, LaVona (played by Allison Janney), puts Tonya in skating class with one of the best coaches in Portland, raising her to be a champion in the harshest way possible. Sure enough, Tonya begins to win competitions against girls twice her age. Though she was often criticized for not displaying enough grace, class, and elegance in her skating routines, in 1991, Tonya Harding became the first American woman to complete and nail a triple axel during a competition. Darkest Hour (2017) Film Review

“Darkest Hour” showcases Churchill’s imperfectness to be his greatest triumph. Directed By: Joe Wright Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 2:05 Review By: Livi Edmonson Golden Globe winner and Academy award nominee, Gary Oldman, channels the great Winston Churchill, in director Joe Wright’s latest film, “Darkest Hour”. The film gives us a more intimate look into the life of Great Britain’s legendary Prime Minister, who claimed his success in his most careless, uneasy moments. We see Churchill’s story unfold from just moments before he was named Prime Minister, all the way up until he rallied his nation to fight for peace against the relentless Germany, proving that he was and will always be, one of the most treasured orators of all time. For those who appreciate historical flicks about great historical leaders--- this film is right up your alley. There has been a handful of films in 2017 that had to do with both Churchill and the monumental battle of Dunkirk.
