"Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse" (2018) Review

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”: the year’s best animated film.

Directed by: Peter Ramsey, Robert Persichetti Jr., Rodney Rothman
Rated: PG
Runtime: 1:56
Review by: Livi Edmonson

Stylized and polished to perfection, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is the ultimate comic book movie masterpiece that audiences must see this holiday season. Scoring a solid 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, “Spider-Verse” tells the story of not one Spider-Man, but quite a few of them, focusing on one spider-like protagonist in particular: Miles Morales.

Miles is teenager from Brooklyn, who is bitten by a radioactive spider and suddenly develops super powers, but I’m sure you already knew this part of the story, right? Turning into a confused and somewhat useless Spider-Man, Miles eventually meets Peter Parker and learns that he is not the only web-slinging hero. With Peter showing him the ropes, Miles soon finds the courage to take a leap of faith and unleash his Spider-Man powers. However, the mighty villain, Kingpin is creating a device that can open portals to many different universes, which is how the different Spider-Man’s are pulled into Mile’s world. Together, Miles and Peter must team up with the other Spidey’s (Spider-Woman, Spider-Man Noir, Penni Parker, and Spider-Ham) to defeat Kingpin and save the Spider-Verse.

Voiced by an A-list cast including Jake Johnson, John Mulaney, Kathryn Hahn, and even Nicolas Cage, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is everything you could want from a movie: it’s fun, imaginative, and highly thrilling. The animations and graphics are absolutely superb and by far, the best audiences have seen all year if not of all time. Mark my words: “Spider-Verse” is on its way to Oscar gold for “Best Animated Feature.” Not only are critics going wild for this webtastic film, but also audiences of all ages everywhere. If you don’t believe the hype, go see it for yourself.

Anyone who is a massive fan of the Marvel comics or a huge Spider-Man fan in general will claim “Spider-Verse” as their new favorite movie. What’s so wonderful about the flick is that it captures every Spider-Man character we know and love, because not everyone grew up knowing Peter Parker as Spider-Man. For some people, they grew up reading about Miles Morales, or maybe even Spider-Woman, also known as Spider-Gwen. Even if you are not a huge Spider-Man fan, you are still guaranteed to enjoy this awesome film, but if you are a fan, it will feel all the more special.

Audiences want to see films that are enjoyable and light-hearted around the holiday season and “Spider-Verse” fits this criterion perfectly. Not only is it hilarious, but also heartfelt in its sweetly inspiring storyline. The film is again, family friendly, so it is the perfect excuse to get out of the house and enjoy some quality family bonding in the theater. Though many people will think that younger children are the target audience for this film, I’m here to tell you that “Spider-Verse” is a film for any person of any age who wants to watch a genuinely entertaining film. Go check it out while you have the time off for the holidays! I give it a 9/10!
