"Green Book" (2018) Review

Image
“Green Book” is the irresistibly charming front runner for 2019 “Best Picture”.  Directed by: Peter Farrelly Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 2:10 Based on the real-life friendship, “Green Book” follows pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) of the Don Shirley Trio and his newly hired, foul-mouthed driver, Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), as they embark on Shirley’s concert tour in 1962’s Deep South. The two men form an unlikely friendship, considering that Dr. Shirley is a poised, successful African-American musician, whereas Tony is a bouncer from a largely American-Italian neighborhood in the Bronx who is contemplating an alluded to past gangster lifestyle to make ends meet. Tony serves not only as Dr. Shirley’s driver on this road trip, but also as his bodyguard in a way, protecting him from the hatred and racism he receives from the still segregated Southern states he performs for. Though the relationship they have starts off as an incredibly shaky one, the pair soon lea

"Beautiful Boy" (2018) Review

Timothèe Chalamet’s enthralling performance crowns him as one of Hollywood’s greatest actors. Directed by: Felix Van Groeningen Rated: R: Runtime: 2:00 Based upon the true stories and memoirs of Nic Sheff and David Sheff, “Beautiful Boy” tells the story of a devoted father, David (Steve Carell), who desperately tries to save his son, Nic (Timothèe Chalamet), from the harmful drugs he addicted to, including the methamphetamine threatening to destroy his life. The film, though dark and saddening, showcases the ultimate love story between a father and his son, showing how even in the most grueling of times, a parent’s love for their child is indestructible.  “Beautiful Boy” is easily one of the most exhausting films I have ever seen- in a great way, that is. It is exhausting in the sense that the story has many ups and downs due to the character of Nic being absolutely relentless when it comes to using drugs, as all drug addicts usually are. Once you think his

"Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018) Review

“Rami Malek becomes the ‘Killer Queen’ of awards season.” Directed by: Bryan Singer Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 2:15 “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the long-awaited Queen/Freddie Mercury bio-pic that many of us never thought would finally be released. After director Bryan Singer (best known for his “X-Men” franchise) was fired after failing to show up to work and has been recently caught amid sexual misconduct allegations, critics have had a horrible taste in their mouth about “Bohemian Rhapsody” before it was even released. However, despite its insanely mediocre Rotten Tomatoes score, there is one thing that all critics can agree upon and it is that Rami Malek is an extraordinary Freddie Mercury. The film effortlessly nails Freddie Mercury and the rest of Queen, showing how they defied all of the rules and became one of the most groundbreaking, unconventional rock bands that the world has ever seen.  Together, they conquered the world as they put out one hit single after

"First Man" (2018) Review

Image
“First Man” is a slow, painful race to the moon. Directed by: Damien Chazelle Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 2:21 Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling portrays Neil Armstrong in this polished yet, emotionally unavailable bio-pic. Adapted from the book by James R. Hansen, “First Man” shows a first-person account of what the astronaut’s life was really like in the 1960s. Audiences are able to see the inner turmoil and struggle Neil and his wife face together, as well as how these inner demons will affect his preparation for the most dangerous mission in space history.  I went to see “First Man” with very high expectations in mind, seeing that Damien Chazelle is easily one of the Hollywood’s most intricate directors. To say I was thoroughly unimpressed with this flick is a complete understatement. One would think that one of the most monumental moments in American history, like Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, would be portrayed in a way that is very beautiful and inspiri
