"Hot Summer Nights" (2018) Review

“Hot Summer Nights”: an ultra-stylish, yet mediocre summer indie flick. Directed by: Elijah Bynum Rated: R Runtime: 2:00 Review by: Livi Edmonson Recent Academy award nominee and arguably young Hollywood’s greatest actor, Timothèe Chalamet leads “Hot Summer Nights” as Daniel: an awkward and lanky teenager who is sent to spend the summer with his Aunt in Cape Cod, Massachusetts after his father passes. Daniel describes the act of being sent away for a summer in the ‘90’s as “cliché” and in a way, it really is, giving the film’s plot a nostalgic vibe of older, more classic stories, that audiences know and love.  While in Cape Cod for the summer, Daniel tries to lay low and fit in but soon finds himself fitting in with the wrong people. Well, one person in particular: Hunter Strawberry (Alex Roe)- the town’s number one bad guy and top drug dealer. After working closely with Hunter and eventually becoming a true companion of his, Daniel finds himself falling for hi

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”: the only successful musical sequel.                                                                                                        Trailer courtesy of Universal Studios. Directed by: Ol Parker Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 1:54 Review by: Livi Edmonson You know it is extremely rare when not only a sequel, but a musical sequel is a better flick than its predecessor. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is one, and probably the only, example of this rare occurrence. The sequel-meets-prequel film picks up right where “Mamma Mia” (2008) left off ten years ago, except for this time, the infamous Donna, played by the outstanding Meryl Streep, is notably absent. (If you have seen the trailer, this should not be a spoiler for you). However, a younger version of Donna (played by Lily James), the 1979 golden gypsy version to be exact, is present.  The film’s plot switches back and forth between the past and the present. The present fo

"Ant-Man and the Wasp" (2018) Review

“Ant-Man and the Wasp”: another outstanding flick to add to Marvel’s summer movie extravaganza. Directed by: Peyton Reed Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 2:05 Review by: Livi Edmonson Everyone’s favorite pint-sized superhero is back in the long-awaited sequel to 2015’s “Ant-Man”, starring the beloved, always hysterical Paul Rudd. Only this time, the ant has a new partner in crime: the Wasp. Though some may call this new Marvel superhero addition Ant-Man’s “side-kick”, the Wasp (played by Evangeline Lilly) is definitely Ant-Man’s partner, if not more considering that she does most of his butt-kicking, dirty work for him the whole entire film. For those unfamiliar with the Marvel predecessor, “Ant-Man”, it is about a pretty normal guy named Scott Lang, who became involved in a few crimes that had him end up in prison for a little while. Ultimately, he is a great family man who wants nothing more than to be a great role model for his beloved daughter, who he calls “Peanu

"Sorry to Bother You" (2018) Review

“Sorry to Bother You”: a wild ride of a film that is both hilarious and horrific. Directed by: Boots Riley Rated: R Runtime: 1:45 Review by: Livi Edmonson “Sorry to Bother You” is one of the first Oscar bait-labeled flicks that we have seen this summer. Coming in hot with a ripe score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics everywhere are raving about this insanely inappropriate, yet wildly entertaining film. The film’s plot takes place in a dystopian yet modern-day Oakland, California. It stars Lakeith Stanfield as Cassius Green: an honorable, hard-working man who’s struggling to make enough for him and his performance artist girlfriend, Detroit (Tessa Thompson), to get by in a time where almost everyone in the world is at their lowest point. He ends up taking a telemarketing job, in hopes of becoming what’s called a “power caller” which is considered to be the “top tier of telemarketing” by his company. He eventually does become a power caller by using a se
